Vision Statement and the Importance of Clarity

Identifying your vision is one of the most important things you will ever do. Vision is clarity and your vision statement is a compass that will guide you through the ups and down that life throws at you. Vision is the ability to see into the future and create a reality that will pull you towards your dreams and goals.

One of my favorite quotes regarding the importance of vision comes from the story “Alice In Wonderland”, when Alice runs into the Cheshire Cat and they have the following conversation:

“Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?
The Cheshire Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.
Alice: I don’t much care where.
The Cheshire Cat: Then it doesn’t much matter which way you go.
Alice: …So long as I get somewhere.
The Cheshire Cat: Oh, you’re sure to do that, if only you walk long enough.”

-Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

I love that quote. The message here is vital to the achievement of what ever you want to do in life… Allow me to explain.

To achieve your goals you must know what you want. Otherwise you will spend your life helping other people achieve their goals and yours will go unfulfilled. How do you do that? Well, for starters, you must look into the future and imagine yourself having already accomplished what you want to do or accomplish.  The more detailed you are, the better.

Allow yourself to feel what it would be like to have already attained your goal. How would you behave? How would you dress? How would you carry yourself? Above all, how does it feel to have achieved your wildest dreams?

Your vision is where you are going and who you become in the process. As you dream big and aim for the stars you will feel yourself being drawn to what you were put on this earth to do.  Everyone has a destiny. The beauty of the situation is that it’s your choice and you can choose anything. Be Clear. Be intentional.

It’s important to remember that this is all about you. Not what you think you “should”  do to make others happy.  This is 100%, totally and completely up to you. What are you passionate about? What difference do you want to make in the world. Who do you want to become? What is the image you have of the best version of your self? What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? Who would you become if you knew you could do anything?

Your vision is your internal compass that will lead you toward the achievement of your goals and the realization of your dreams. After all, goals are simply dreams with deadlines on them, broken down into steps that you can  accomplish so you can track your progress and  measure your results.

Take the time to write down your vision as it pertains to your future. Imagine yourself having already accomplished your deepest desires.  What does that look like?  How does it feel?  The more you envision and experience your vision, the more powerful it will guide you.

Write it down. Something happens to the mind when you write down your vision. You become more bold and your thoughts become a reality that used to simply be in your head but now exists in the world. This is your declaration. This is you taking the steps to get what you truly want.

Are you getting it?  Are you starting to see the massive importance of knowing where you are going?  It’s time to take a look at your values and what you hold dear.  What makes you tick? When are you happiest?  What makes you feel alive? What do people tell you that you are really good at? What would  you do, even if you weren’t being paid for it? What do you do that you love and you’re a natural at it? These are all questions that will help you define your vision.

I’ve included the following quotes on vision to help you gain some perspective.  Each person that is quoted here is a leader and influencer. Each of these people had a vision and they were very clear on what they wanted. As they grew, so did their vision and in turn, they changed the world. As you read these quotes, notice what jumps out and speaks to you…

Whether you think you can or you cant… You’re right. – Henry Ford

“Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them – a desire, a dream, a vision.”
-Muhammad Ali

A man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder.  -Thomas Carlyle

The only thing worse that being blind is having sight but no vision.  -Helen Keller

“When you have a vision that is strong enough and powerful enough, nothing can stand in your way.” Lewis Howes

“Vision without execution is hallucination.” Thomas Edison

“Create the highest grandest vision possible for your life, because you become what you believe.” Oprah Winfrey

“The importance of a clear vision can not be overstated. Your vision is the light house that will guide you through unexpected storms and when things get crazy -which they always do at some point or another,  you will loose your direction and forget where you are going. Your vision will get you back on course. Your vision will be the guiding light that will bring you through. All you have to do is get off your ass and commit to making it happen. Vision is clarity. Vision is direction.” Joe Littell

So now that you have a concept of vision, what’s yours?  It’s insanely important that you take a few minutes to write this down. Take as long as you need. You can share your vision if you want to, but be careful who you share it with. Even those you love and who love you, might try to tell you that your dream is too big. They don’t mean any harm by this, they are simply telling you that your dream is too big for them. This is called projection and it is toxic to your vision, so keep your cards close.

Remember, talk is cheap. It’s better to show people what you’ve done rather then talk about it.  Like my dear friend Brad’s Grandpa used to tell him… “You don’t sit on the bed and tell her what you’re going to do…”

Its when we first start things that we are most influenced by the opinions of other people so only tell those you trust about your vision. If they don’t understand or support you, it’s their problem, not yours.  You are responsible to yourself first and foremost. Without hurting yourself or others – never let anything stand in your way.

You are one of a kind. Way deep down you know this. There is no one else like you in the world. You are unique and only you can do you. There is a reason you are so strongly drawn to your dreams and that reason is because they are you.

The world is waiting for you to bring your vision to reality. The time is now. Believe in yourself and don’t hold back. You have nothing to lose and absolutely everything to gain.

You Got This.

-Joe
